Playing Through the Blues is an online guide which will lead you through the details of playing blues guitar. It is aimed at people with some knowledge of playing the guitar who want to improve their blues soloing and improvisation. A variety of different content is provided to help you learn the scales and then play like the blues legends.
You get instant access to the Playing Through the Blues content when you buy it through their website. All the material can either be accessed directly online or downloaded to your computer to browse through at your leisure. The course comprises of a main e-book which provides the lessons and this is supplemented by video tutorials and audio samples.
The lessons are fairly well put together but could perhaps do with a bit more structure; much of the time it feels as if you are just learning lick after lick without knowing why. However, there is some good information on blues scales and how to use the 'box' system to quickly learn how to solo along to a backing track. The videos which support the lessons are quite good quality but the tutor seems occasionally unsure of himself and doesn't seem entirely comfortable in front of a camera.
Throughout you learn about the style of some of the great blues players and learn riffs and licks that they use in their songs. You will also learn about different chords you might not be familiar with that you can use to spice up your blues jams. Once you have picked up a few new skills you can practise them to one of the included jam tracks.
Playing Through the Blues is a decent enough resource for guitarists who want to learn how to play the blues. The course could do with a bit more structure to it, but there is enough content to teach you some new tips and tricks to improve your playing. The price is perhaps slightly too high for what's on offer but it is by no means the worst around.
