Instant Play Guitar is a multimedia CD-ROM based guitar tuition course which takes you through the basics of learning to play the guitar. With over 40 interactive lessons comprising of video, audio and tablature it has plenty of content to get you started on the road to becoming a musician.
If you are a complete beginner Instant Play Guitar is a good place to start. It will soon have you playing popular songs and reading guitar tablature after you learn only a few chords. By the end of the course you should know enough theory and have learned enough techniques to be comfortable learning songs on your own and even writing your own music.
Each of the 40 lessons consists of a written introduction supplemented by audio and visual samples which help to reinforce the ideas. Each lesson also includes a number of pieces of music or songs for you to learn which are presented in guitar tablature and music notation. These are accompanied by handy tips on how to go about playing the piece and the techniques that should be used. The videos included are very useful as the split screen format shows you what both your right and left hands should be doing at the same time. A novel aspect is that they show the right hand view as if you are looking from inside the guitar which is especially useful for fingerpicking songs so that you can see the individual fingers moving clearly.
Instant Play Guitar is quite a few years old now so it does look slightly dated if you are used to modern application and multimedia interfaces. However, the content is still as relevant as ever and it is well structured to help you learn quickly and efficiently. It covers a variety of styles, but seems to mainly be concerned with blues and country with other styles being given only a brief mention.

The lessons cover a lot of material and provide a lot of interesting pieces of music for you to learn which helps to hold your attention throughout the course. The videos are well produced and really help you to see what your hands should be doing while the theory behind them is explained clearly so that you know why they should be doing that. The best part is that it can be picked up pretty cheaply on Amazon so it's definitely worth a look.
