Guitar For Dummies is part of the best selling "...for dummies" series which covers everything from economics to mechanics. The book provides a good introduction to playing guitar for absolute beginners and by the end of it you should be able to confidently strum out some tunes.
Guitar For Dummies is a fairly hefty tome that you probably won't want to be carrying around to practise sessions with you. It is ideal for learning at home though and it's carefully structured and laid out lessons ease you gently into the world of guitar playing. If you haven't yet bought a guitar there is an excellent section on choosing your first one which is followed up by chapters on maintenance and guitar accessories.
The layout of the book will be familiar to anyone who has read one from this series previously. Intuitive icons show you which bits you can safely skip if they get too technical or which bits are important to pay attention to. Each chapter teaches you some techniques demonstrated by a number of exercises before finally giving you a full piece of music or song to play.
The accompanying CD is very useful when used in conjunction with the book. All the lessons and exercises have a corresponding track number which will play a high quality recording of the riff or song on the page. Any music for you to learn is also provided in guitar tablature as well as musical notation so that you can begin to develop an understanding of music theory.
The book covers both acoustic and electric styles of playing, but sometimes seems to get confused as to which it is talking about - for example displaying photos of electric guitars beside songs for the acoustic guitar. Most of the licks you are taught are based in the rock, blues or country genres, but occasionally they provide something a bit different.
Books in the "...For Dummies" series can be a bit hit or miss and some people love them while others hate them. This one is somewhere in the middle; it is a good introduction to playing guitar, but we feel there are better books out there. However, the price won't break the bank and there is a lot of useful content included. This book won't take you to an advanced level of guitar playing but is a good choice for anyone who wants to learn the basics.
