Guitar Coach Deluxe is a multimedia based course which lets you learn at your own pace using your PC. It contains 6 different modules, each covering different aspects of playing the guitar taking you from absolute beginner to being able to play songs by popular artists. It is possible to download each module individually or purchase the whole collection by mail order.
Each module in the series is slightly different in its teaching style. The first two modules take you through the basics of playing the guitar and the different techniques you need to know. These use interactive lessons combined with video tutorials to help you learn quickly and efficiently. The next three modules increase your repertoire of riffs and songs by providing video tutorials supported by guitar tablature which teach you to play well known pieces of music. The final module is really not a lesson but a chord dictionary which contains over 7000 chords in multiple voicings.
The lessons in Guitar Coach Deluxe are pretty comprehensive and take you through practical guitar techniques as well as some musical theory along the way. The design and graphics don't look bang up to date but are perfectly fine for their purpose and the interface is very simple to use. Most of the lessons make use of an animated fretboard which shows you where to put your fingers along with the guitar tablature which teaches you the whole piece. Many are also supported by some decent quality videos which are split screen format to show you what both hands should be doing at the same time.
The course covers a variety of different styles, but the licks and songs you learn are mainly rock, blues and country. Discs 4 and 5 put what you have learned to the test by teaching you to play famous songs by well known artists. There is even a guitar based version of Robbie Williams' 'Angels' for you to learn!
Guitar Coach Deluxe is a reasonably good value for money guitar course. It isn't the best presented course we have seen but contains all the knowledge you need to begin learning the instrument. It also provides a lot of good video tutorials to teach you some popular songs that will go down well at parties. To obtain the best value you should buy the whole set of modules at once, but it might be worth downloading one first to see if you like it.
