Gigajam is an online course which will teach you the basics of playing guitar by providing full and fun lessons incorporating a variety of different teaching methods. The course was originally accompanied by a professionally produced TV series which is now available as part of the online content.
Gigajam is aimed at beginner guitarists who have bought their first instrument but don't yet know what to do with it. The 10 lessons take you from learning the anatomy of the guitar through to playing your first full length song. At the end of the course you will be able to play 5 full length songs - each in a different style - which are included in the downloadable songbook.
Each lesson comprises a TV show, a booklet and a set of exercises to help you practise what you have learned. The TV shows are very informative and take the format of a presenter learning guitar from an experienced tutor along with the viewer. It's best to then go and work through the lesson booklet and practise some of the exercises before moving on.
One aspect of the course we particularly liked was the downloadable software which not only provides a backing band track for practising your playing, but also a feature to test how well you are playing. If you have a MIDI guitar you can connect it to your computer and the software will tell you if you played the correct note and in the correct timing then give you a percentage score for each lesson. It's a bit like a real instrument version of Guitar Hero!
The downside of the Gigajam course is that it doesn't take you much past the level of beginner guitarist. Although the 10 lessons are very comprehensive and feature a lot of content, there is only so much that you can learn from so few lessons. However, the final lesson will have you playing along to a full song with a backing band. The added bonus is that this course is part of a series which also teaches people how to play drums, bass and keyboard which means if you convince a few friends to learn too you can have a full band in 10 lessons!
Gigajam is an excellent course for absolute beginner guitarists who want to learn to play properly without taking some of the shortcut routes which other courses offer. The lessons provide lots of content to keep you interested and the software is great if you have a MIDI guitar to plug in. The first lesson comes for free so why not check it out and see if you like the teaching style before signing up for the whole lot!
