GuitarPro 5.1 is the latest version of eMedia's hugely popular guitar tablature editor. The software lets you create, edit and playback guitar tablature notation diagrams using a realistic sound engine with real guitar sounds. It can also help you learn new songs by showing you the notes on the tablature or musical score as they are played.
GuitarPro is not a 'learn to play guitar' course like most products in this category; instead it is a software application that allows you to get the most out of guitar tablature notation. This is perfect for anyone who can play a bit of guitar and wants to learn new songs quickly and easily. Thousands of tablature files are available on the internet for almost any song you can think of and GuitarPro makes it easy to read and even play back these files using real guitar sounds.
As you play a song the software highlights the notes on the tablature notation as well as optionally on the associated musical score. This lets you easily see how different sections of the song should be played. You can control the speed of playback to slow difficult parts down in order to learn them more easily. The sound quality is a lot better than the usual MIDI playback because real instrument samples are used. The quality of the play back depends a lot on the quality of the tablature, but most of what you find is pretty high quality.
As well as being able to play back tabs you find on the internet GuitarPro allows you to create your own and export them as a variety of different files. You can even do this without knowing much about musical theory as the interface simply allows you to click on the diagram where you want a note or chord to be placed. You then specify the length of the note and the software automatically creates the musical score to go along with your tab. If you have a MIDI instrument, like a keyboard, connected to your PC you can also use this to place notes on the diagram.
GuitarPro is an excellent piece of software for anyone who wants to learn new songs on the guitar in a quick and easy manner. There is an abundance of tablature files on the internet meaning you can find almost any song you might want to learn to play. The interface looks slightly intimidating at first but you quickly become familiar with the basic features you need to play back tabs. GuitarPro comes highly recommended by our review team.
