Editor's Verdict:

The eMedia Beginner's Guitar Course is a 4 volume series of CD-ROM based guitar lessons. Each volume covers a new aspect of learning to play the guitar so that by the end of the series you should be a confident and accomplished guitarist. Alternatively, each volume can be used separately to brush up your skills on a particular area of your guitar playing.

The eMedia Beginner's Guitar Course is aimed at beginner guitarists who have never picked up an instrument before. However, intermediate guitarists may find the later volumes useful - especially if they have never taken the time to learn music theory. Volume 1 covers the absolute basics of strumming chords on a guitar, volume 2 covers rock and blues style, volume 3 covers fingerpicking melodies and volume 4 teaches you music theory.

The whole course is set out in a similar manner; you get videos, audio and an animated fretboard to show you where to place your fingers. The videos are well produced and demonstrated by a professional guitar teacher. They are also recorded in split screen fashion so that you can see what your right and left hand should be doing at the same time. Another handy feature is that audio is provided in live recorded format as well as MIDI format so that you can slow the MIDI track down to learn difficult sections.

Included on each volume is a software tuner, a chord dictionary and a metronome application. These are all handy tools to have available while you are learning so that you have fast access to figuring out new chords or improving your timing. Once you have mastered it all you can also try learning full songs from well know artists like Bob Dylan.

The course covers a few different styles of guitar, but mainly rock, blues and acoustic strumming and fingerpicking. This might not sound like much but it forms the basis of many popular songs today and will set you in good stead for picking up new styles.

The eMedia Beginner's Guitar Course is a reasonably priced and well designed learn to play guitar course. We thought it might be handy to have an accompanying book with the CD-ROM so that you don't have to be in front of your computer to practice, but it is possible to print some of the songs out. We recommend checking out this guitar course if you are looking for a CD-ROM based learning method.
