Amazing Guitar Secrets is a DVD, book and CD-ROM based guitar tuition course. There is a lot of material included which covers everything from the basics of tuning your guitar through to advanced soloing techniques. The production of the video and layout of the accompanying books is not the most professional we have seen, but there is a lot of information contained within.
Amazing Guitar Secrets claims to be a guitar tuition course which can take you from complete novice to advanced guitar master more quickly than any other method. The course materials come in the form of 2 DVDs which provide video and interactive elements covering all aspects of playing guitar, a CD-ROM with extra video tutorials and a book taking you through some basic music and guitar theory. As an added bonus you get 40 MP3 jam tracks, 20 finger strength exercises, a progress tracker and a subscription to a mailing list which sends you regular articles to keep you motivated.
The fairly unprofessional website selling this course is a bit of a giveaway as to the content of it. Although there genuinely is a lot of information included, the production value is not that high and some of the videos and interactive elements look a bit amateurish. What's more they do not make enough of the fact that DVD's and CD-ROMS can be enhanced greatly by providing a lot of interactive elements - instead you are just subjected to a lot of video tutorials. We aren't saying this is a bad course, but it is probably possible to find the same information presented a bit better elsewhere.
The course covers a variety of styles, but is mainly concerned with rock and blues. This is fine and serves as a good basis from which to work on other styles, but if you have an acoustic guitar to start off with, you might really want to learn different songs. Another slight niggle is that most of the lessons are demonstrated on an electric guitar so if you have an acoustic some of the riffs and solos just don't pack enough of a punch.
The price of the course is stated at $199, but there seems to be a permanent "sale" on so that you can get it for $97. This isn't too bad as you do get a lot of material, but we still think it is slightly on the high side. The sales pitch is also a bit enthusiastic by valuing the "progress chart" - essentially a very basic weekly diary - at $35.
To be fair, this course provides quite a lot of material to work with. We aren't sure if it is quite worth the price tag, but you will certainly get all the information you need to get started playing the guitar. Also it includes something for most levels of guitarist - even if it's just to practise your soloing along to the extra jam tracks. With a bit of work this course could be vastly improved, but for the moment it's a pretty average beginner level course.
