Actiontab is a fun and friendly web based guitar tutor. It focuses on getting you playing as quickly and easily as possible without having to bother with the dull side of learning an instrument. It comes with lots of lessons to work through and a good sized library of riffs and songs to learn.
Actiontab is aimed at complete guitar novices who want to learn how to play something the quick and easy way. Once you have figured out how the whole application works, it really does the trick and lets you see exactly how a tune should be played. However, even though it is not hard to work out for yourself, given that it is aimed at new guitar players we would expect some sort of tutorial on how to use the program. When you first sign up you are essentially just thrown in to the first lesson without really getting to see what all the controls do.
The software itself is Flash based - which means it runs directly from your web browser as long as you have the Flash plug-in installed, but you will have to be connected to the internet to use it. The interface is essentially made up of a guitar neck diagram onto which colour coded dots are placed to show you where to put your fingers. Anyone who is familiar with guitar tablature will understand easily but new players may find it confusing at first. The rest of the interface provides a box which gives you handy information about the song you are learning and controls to step backwards and forwards through the song.
As well as the main guitar neck interface, you have access to a number of videos to help you learn the real basics of playing guitar - such as how to hold the instrument and where to put your hands. These are great for showing you the things that a diagram can't and should be the starting point for anyone trying to learn.
ActionTab covers a range of different styles in its lessons - from Rock and Blues to Classical and Jazz - and new songs are added every week. With around 50 lessons incorporated there is certainly enough to get novices started learning, but intermediate to advanced players will probably be familiar with most of the material. They still may appreciate the way the software brings standard tablature to life however - especially the fact that it adds right-hand strumming and picking information to the standard notation.
In all ActionTab is a useful guitar tutor for complete beginner guitarists. Although it might take some time to figure out what the interface is telling you, once you have it becomes easy to learn new songs pretty quickly. More accomplished guitarists may find the whole thing slightly too simplistic for their liking, but may still find it a useful method for quickly learning a new song. Although there are applications out there which perhaps have a slightly shallower learning curve, ActionTab is perfect if you want to put a little bit more effort in so that you can start playing more advanced songs quickly.
